Rapid Prototyping

University Module - 2023

The objective of this module was to rapidly design and develop five prototypes for various genres and mechanics of game development.

Prototype 1 - Arcade

We were required to have multiple levels to a classic arcade game, with a functioning high score and leaderboard system.

Prototype 2 - Dungeon Design

This was purely focused on the level design for a dungeon level. I created a moving box puzzle system that slowly increased in difficulty and complexity.

Prototype 3 - Boss Fight

We had to design a final boss encounter, with multiple phases and attack patterns. I chose to create a twin stick shooter themed around the Death Star from Star Wars. Phase one was to destroy stationary turrets, after which a ship would arrive and move back and forth blasting in all directions.

Prototype 4 - Couch Co-op

We had to have an asymmetric split screen co op, with each player having unique mechanics. I themed the game around ants, specifically a soldier and worker ant that were lost in a kitchen and trying to navigate their way back to the colony. The worker would not be able to see far, but be able to pick up and move objects many times heavier than it. The soldier can see more and also attack any threats to the pair.

Prototype 5 - Open World

Our last prototype was to make an open world game with a large map with unique locations and different quest types. I was able to make a basic map with a progressive layout that players would follow and narrative missions that would bring players to the next questing area.
